You may think it is a little strange that anyone’s favorite passage of scripture in the Book of Mormon is 2 Ne 5:21

And he had caused the cursing to come upon them, yea, even a sore cursing, because of their iniquity. For behold, they had hardened their hearts against him, that they had become like unto a flint; wherefore, as they were white, and exceedingly fair and delightsome, that they might not be enticing unto my people the Lord God did cause a skin of blackness to come upon them.

It is a controversial scripture. It is on the surface, racist, imaginative, and sexually demeaning.

Things we have assumed about scripture, revelation and the church, are like ogre's and Onions, there are layers. I know that there are more layers to peel back, this takes time and patience and pondering. This blog represents where my pondering goes. I wanted to start by addressing the Black and White issues of the Book of Mormon. In the future, I will blog about the temple, Book of Mormon topics, word of wisdom, law of chastity, raising family, the nature of God, and other subjects as they arise.

There are different ways to interpret this scripture. The first series of posts will go in depth, looking at 2 Nephi 5:21 and related passages from the Book of Mormon.

What is being explored in this blog is nuance in the teachings of The Book of Mormon, and the Restored Gospel of Jesus Christ. I am orthodox, but a bit out of the box.

My hope is that you as a reader will approach this blog with an open mind.  That you will discover as much as possible on your own. I may pose a question or some suggested reading/video/sites. You can discover answers and insights yourself, and when you do, compare it to what I and others have found. Please add to this blog by contributing your insights in the comments. I ask that you participate in love and desire to reason.

I am grateful for people who have both nuanced and literal interpretations. There are those honest in heart who have not found answers. People have had shelves break under the weight of unanswered questions. I don't have all the answers, I have hope and faith that answers can be found with patience, perseverance, and study. As I dig deeper, I find more peace as I spend more time pondering the scriptures, and words of the living prophets.

I love the church that I belong to, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. I find peace and comfort in the gospel and I hope and pray that what I write is edifying and taken in a spirit of love and joy.

I am not an official spokesperson for the church, the views and opinions expressed in this blog are those of mine and other contributors. They do not necessarily reflect the official policy or position of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.
